The data type to use datetime or smalldatetime. These always include
the time portion, but set it to midnight for dates only.

Conversion should occur in the client, by using parameterised statements.

Here is an example that I have canned of a parameterised statement in ADO
(it's VB6 and not ASP, but I believe that they are not too different):

Set cmd = CreateObject("ADODB.Command")
Set cmd.ActiveConnection = cnn

cmd.CommandType = adCmdText
cmd.CommandText = " SELECT OrderID, OrderDate, CustomerID, ShipName " & _
" FROM dbo.Orders WHERE 1 = 1 "
If custid <> "" Then
cmd.CommandText = cmd.CommandText & " AND CustomerID LIKE ? "
cmd.Parameters.Append
cmd.CreateParameter("@.custid", adWChar, adParamInput, 5, custid)
End If

If shipname <> "" Then
cmd.CommandText = cmd.CommandText & " AND ShipName LIKE ? "
cmd.Parameters.Append cmd.CreateParameter("@.shipname", _
adVarWChar, adParamInput, 40, shipname)
End If

Set rs = cmd.Execute

Use datetime datatype and you can get plenty of information regarding
it in BOL.

How to input?

Hi again was just wondering what the best way is too write a script too write a script to record a sale of a workofart? into Sales and WorkOfArt Tables?
Thx :confused:I'm not sure I understand what you want, so we'll start with:INSERT INTO Sales (column_list1) VALUES (column_values1)

INSERT INTO Workofart (column_list2) VALUES (column_values2)I must be missing something, this seems way too easy.

How to input and output simultaneously in SQL 2005 Express?

I want to process data of an old VS6 project in VisualStudio2005.
First part is done. With SQL Management Studio I created the database file 'dbTest4' and attached it to SQL 2005 Express server (.\SQLEXPRESS).
Then I recoded the VS6_C++ project feeding its data into the database file using the ConnectionString:
"Provider='sqloledb';Data Source='.';Initial Catalog='dbTest4';Integrated Security='SSPI')"
Until here its working fine.

Assecond part I want to catch these data with VisualStudio2005 for processing there.
In VisualStudio 2005 I created a Windows Application as new project added the database file 'dbTest4' as data source, waited two minutes till VisualStudio2005 had created the DataGridTools bound to the tabbles of my database file and dropped a grid tool on to the surface of the new Form.
Great, within 5 minutes I had created a working database solution without writing a single line of code and it worked well. Starting the new build exe as standlolone it showed the data of my database file in a nice grid view.
But it worked as standolone only. When I tried to combine both parts one part was blockedalways producing error messages as ' ..error 32 (The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.) while attempting to open the file '...\dbTest4'.

Does anybody know
how to get this input/output combination running
or is ist impossible to reach my target with SQL 2005 Express?

After reading through Roger Wolters November 2005 article SQL Server 2005 Express Edition User Instances and some hours of testing I came to the conclusion:
When using Visual Studio not exclusively but simultaneously with other clients as SQLcmd, SQL Managent Studio or what else, as shown in my screenshot 325 you should consider to
set 'User Instance=False'
if you are struck by connection problems.
For details you are welcome to visit my sreenshot folder. By clicking the numbered screenshots, enlarging them and using your browsers back button you can follow a detailed installation and see why, where and how to set 'User Instance=False'.

How to improve this SQL statement?

I have a query in MS Access that will select the only record from a table DECISION, given three input parameters: pMonth, pLoansize and pLTV. The record should have the maximal possible value for MONTH, LOAN_SIZE and PERCENTAGE, in this order.

My query is working, but a bit slow since it seems joining four tables. I'd appreicate for any idea about how to improve this query, which is as
follow. Thanks.

------------------------
SELECT distinct C.DECISION_ID, C.DECISION_NAME_ID, C.MONTH, C.LOAN_SIZE, C.percentage, C.ADMIN_FEE_HL_ID, C.PNTY_ID, C.OFFER_RATE_ID
FROM DECISION AS A, DECISION AS B, DECISION AS C, DECISION AS D
WHERE
(D.MONTH = (SELECT max(MONTH) FROM DECISION D WHERE pLoansize>=D.LOAN_SIZEand pMONTH >= D.MONTH AND pLTV >= D.percentage))
AND
(B.LOAN_SIZE= (SELECT max(loan_size) FROM DECISION B WHERE B.MONTH = D.MONTH AND pLoansize>=B.LOAN_SIZEAND pLTV >= B.percentage))
AND
(A.percentage = (SELECT max(percentage) FROM DECISION A WHERE A.MONTH = D.MONTH and A.loan_size=B.LOAN_SIZE
AND pLTV >= A.percentage))
AND C.MONTH = D.MONTH
AND C.LOAN_SIZE= B.loan_size
AND C.percentage = A.percentagetotal shot in the dark, please let me know if this works:SELECT DECISION_ID
, DECISION_NAME_ID
, MONTH
, LOAN_SIZE
, percentage
, ADMIN_FEE_HL_ID
, PNTY_ID
, OFFER_RATE_ID
FROM DECISION AS A
WHERE MONTH = (
SELECT max(MONTH)
FROM DECISION
)
AND LOAN_SIZE = (
SELECT max(loan_size)
FROM DECISION
WHERE MONTH = A.MONTH
)
AND percentage = (
SELECT max(percentage)
FROM DECISION
WHERE MONTH = A.MONTH
and loan_size = a.LOAN_SIZE
)

http://r937.com/|||Hi r937,

Thanks for the try. But I am afraid that it is not working. Your SQL may end up with no record selected. For example, a simplified DECISION table:

Month, Loan_size, Percentage
8, 100, 70
4, 200, 50
6, 150, 80|||did you try it?

i tried it on your sample of 3 and it gave the row with

8, 100, 70

if you just wanted the max of all three colulmns, that's a totally different query (and a lot simpler, too)

i thought you wanted row integrity

for example, suppose there are 80 rows in the table, of which 20 belong to the highest month

then out of those 20 rows which have the highest month, 6 of those rows have the highest loan_size for that month

then out of those 6 rows which have the highest loan_size for the highest month, one of them has the highest percentage

my query will always return a row, as long as there is at least one row in the table

perhaps you did not explain your problem correctly?

i tried to see what your query was attempting to do, but it's seriously messed up

or maybe i totally misunderstood you

rudy|||Hi Rudy,

Sorry it was my mistake. The query is working now since I missed
out something. Thank you very much.

How to impletement this query in SSIS package

Is there component in SSIS Package that I can use SQL Statement to update input dataset column based on a join query with a table?

update <input dataset> set column01 = -1
where column01 not in (select column from dbo.columnlist)
and column01 <> -1

Perhaps a combination of derived columns, conditional statements, and merge joins (perhaps).|||

Hi Phil,

if I can't not write SQL script to impletement this, I have to use condition split (for column01<>-1 ) -> Sort->Merge Join(Join dbo.columnlist table )->Condition Split (column from dbo.columnlist is null), derived column (update column01 with -1) -> Union All.

it looks so complicated.

do you know is there any component that we can write script to update the input column set? I know we can use VBScript component to do this , but I'm wondering if we can use SQL Script.

|||I think you should perform a lookup transformation against "select column from dbo.columnlist".

Using the lookup error output, you can add a derived column that sets column01 to -1. Then, use a union all to join the normal lookup output with its error output.

Don't worry about the "and column01 <> -1" statement. It is worthless.|||

how could I impletement "Not in (select column from columnlist )" in a lookup component?

a lookup component can only use equal join.

I tried with 'enable memeory restriction' and modify the SQL Statement , replacing the '=' with '<>', but it prompts error when I debug, saying 'no match rows', but actually I do have match rows.

Right, which is why I said to use the error output. For every input row that isn't in the lookup, it'll go down the error output (the red arrow).

How to implement a DropDownList w/o a Table

I am using Visual Studio 2005 & SQL Server. How do i implement a DDL for users to select which value to input. like i can with Access. i do not need a table i think. if not the table would have only ID & Value.?

If you want a static set of items in the dropdown list you can define them in the property panel under the property Items you will find a collection, click the "..." and add items with value and text to appear in the dropdown list.

Best regards,
Per Salmi

If you're trying to get the values from the database, you can do something like this:

Sub Page_Load(ByVal senderAs Object,ByVal eAs EventArgs)

If Not Page.IsPostBackThen GetData()End If
End Sub

Sub GetData()

Dim connStringAs String
Dim conAs SqlConnection

Try connString = System.Web.Configuration.WebConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("ConnectionString1").ConnectionString

con =New SqlConnection(connString)

Dim cmdAs SqlCommand =New SqlCommand()
Dim readerAs SqlDataReader

cmd.Connection = con

cmd.CommandText ="EXECUTE dbo.GetDepartmentCode" reader = cmd.ExecuteReaderIf reader.HasRowsThen
While (reader.Read)
Dim newItemAs New ListItem
newItem.Text = (reader.Item("DeptCode")).ToString
newItem.Value = (reader.Item("DeptCode")).ToString
deptCodeDDL.Items.Add(newItem)
End While
End If reader.Close()Catch exAs Exception
Response.Write(ex)
Finally con.Close() con.Dispose()End Try

Catch exAs ApplicationException
Response.Write("Could not load the database")
End Try
End Sub

The ASP.Net side would like this:

<asp:DropDownList ID="deptCodeDDL" runat="server"></asp:DropDownList>

A few things to note though.

In the code I've posted, I use a stored procedure (sproc) to retrieve the data from the database. If you don't what sprocs are, you can read about themhere. Using sprocs is generally considered a better way of accessing the db.

Also, you will of course, have to replace DeptCode with the column name from where you will be getting the values.

Finally, I use a ConnectionString, which is being retrieved from the Web.config file. You should have that in you application folder.

If you don't, given below is a sample:

<!--

</connectionStrings>
<system.web>
<!--

symbols into the compiled page. Because this
affects performance, set this value to true only
during development.
--><compilation debug="false"
</compilation>

--><authentication mode="Windows"/>
<!--
The <customErrors> section enables configuration

it enables developers to configure html error pages
to be displayed in place of a error stack trace.

<error statusCode="403" redirect="NoAccess.htm" />
<error statusCode="404" redirect="FileNotFound.htm" />
</customErrors>
--></system.web>
</configuration>

You will have to replace SERVERNAME with you server name and DBNAME with your db name.
