You can′t cahnge the id column to a autonumber (in SQL Server it is called identity column), you will have to add a column and assign the identity value while the creation to it. Thats actually what the designer like SSMS does behind the scenes, creating a new table with the ID column, copying all the data from one to the other table, renaming the new one and dropping the old.
You don′t have to care about that if you are using the GUI, its just to keep in mind as the process will take a while.

How to insert empty string

I got a SQL statement like that
Insert into TableA (columnA,columnB,ColumnC) select
VariableA, VariableB,VariableC
Where columnA,columnB,ColumnC are Varchar. VariableA,
VariableB,VariableC are variables return by VB Function. If the
VariableA = A, VariableC = C, VariableB contains no chacracter then
the statemnet would become as follows:
Insert into TableA (columnA,columnB,ColumnC) select A,,C
The above Insert statement is not valid because two comma exist after
select A (,,). Therefore I need to make VariableB contains an empty
space, i.e VariableB = " " . But I do not want VariableB contains a
space. My question is how to make "Insert into TableA
(columnA,columnB,ColumnC) select A,,C"
valid without adding a space character to VariableB. That means how I
can insert VariableB without adding a space character to VariableB?

--|||You can't get SQL server to accept a syntactically incorrect statement.
What you should be doing is a little interpretation on the VB side
before you fire off the T-SQL statement to the SQL server. My VB is a
little rusty but it would be something like:
dim a,b,c
dim SQL
..
SQL = "insert into tableA (colA, colB, colC) values ("
if (a = "") then SQL = SQL & "null, "
else SQL = SQL & a & ", "
if (b = "") then SQL = SQL & "null, "
else SQL = SQL & b & ", "
if (c = "") then SQL = SQL & "null)"
else SQL = SQL & c & ")"
..
send your T-SQL string off to the server now
..
It should be dead simple to write around particular cases when you're
preparing the SQL statement on the VB side. Alternately you could
specify "''" instead of "null" if you wanted an empty string in that
column rather than a null. There are a number of different ways you can
do it but they're all fiddling with the SQL string using VB before you
send it to the server.

How to insert a zero length string into a field using SqlDataSource?

I have a few columns in table with default value defined as zero length string (''). I want to insert record from DetailsView which uses SqlDataSource as DataSource. In the ItemInserting event, if the data is not valid, I want to use zero length string for the column. But I always get Null instead of zero length string. The code in ItemInserting event looks like this:

e.Values("myFld") = ""

The line: e.Values("myFld") = "" put Null in the column.

How can I set a column as zero length string using the SqlDataSource?

How to INSERT a string that contains single-quotes?

My code results in SQL statements like the following one - and it gives an error because of the extra single-quotes in 'it's great':

Here's the error I get when I try this code in SQL Server:

Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 1
Incorrect syntax near 's'.
Msg 105, Level 15, State 1, Line 1
Unclosed quotation mark after the character string ''.

I need to know how I can insert a string such as 'it's great' - how do I deal with the extra quotes issue? is there a way to ecape it like this 'it/'s great' ? This doesn't seem to work.

You don't have to pass that value. In the colum starttime set the data type to 'starttime' then for the default value enter getdate()

That should fix your problem.

That would be an acceptable format (YYYY-MM-DD HH:mm:ss), of course you lose the sub-second precision though. If you always want to insert the current datetime, then as the previous poster said, change your insert statement to use getdate() rather than take the value from a passed parameter.

In SQL Server, you should omit COLUMN. I don't know if this will work with
Excel:
string strCom = " ALTER TABLE [Sheet1$] ADD Phone INTEGER ";

This syntax is valid for Microsoft SQL Server. I don't know what syntax Jet
expects or if it is even possible to add a column to an existing sheet using
the Jet OleDb provider
You might try posting your question to the OleDb forum.

object automation is very flexible way of interfacing excel:

set owsht=owbk.activesheet

...

After trying every way I could come up with I can't get a filter clause
to work with a passed variable ...
I have a cursor that pulls a filter string from a table (works OK),
then I want to use that filter in a second cursor, but can't get the
syntax ...

@.bakfilter is equal to "MISV2_db_%.BAK" before I try to open and fetch
from the second cursor. Here is the cursor declaration:

DECLARE curFiles CURSOR FOR
SELECT FileName, FileDate
FROM DataFile
WHERE (((Active)=1) AND ((FileName) LIKE '@.bak_filter'))
ORDER BY FileDate DESC

What do I need to do to get it to use the string contained in
@.bak_filter?

Hi Jim,

Remove the quotes: LIKE @.bak_filter

However, I hope that you're aware that cursor-based processing is usually
not needed? Set-based solutions are almost always better. Of course, if
you need to perform an intrinsically row-based operation (like sending
mail or performing some OS command with xp_cmdshell), this doesn't apply.
